Masking and Foil

Some interesting detail work has been taking place on the habitation module. First, in order to reflect the idea that the dome is composed of smaller parts, the interior surface needs to look like it is covered in multiple interlocking panels. This should also provide a sense of scale. Masking took substantial time, but the result is effective (I used these pre-cut masks produced by an aftermarket company called “Aztek Dummy”).

I also added gold foil to what I’ve decided are solar reflectors for thermal management. This also adds a nice touch of color to an otherwise gray-tone vehicle. In fact, the gold has a warm tint, which is better, I think, than a cooler tint in this case.

Ping pong balls are used for propellant tanks (the idea being the dome piece with everyone in it can separate from the propulsion module in an emergency). I love the color of copper, so I decided to use a dark copper tone for these.

As you can see in the final photo, wiring, LEDs, and fiber optics are being installed for lighting. So far, this has gone well. In fact, I ran out of fiber optic (I don’t usually plan in advance, preferring to design and build as I go), so that stalled me a little. No worries, I’ve ordered more and have plenty of other things I can do in the interim…
